Bhubaneswar: Intense heat wave continues to prevail in Odisha with six cities recording maximum temperature above 40 degrees Celsius today. Sonepur recorded highest maximum temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius followed by Bolangir (40.5), Malkangiri (40.2) while Talcher and Angul recorded 40.1 degrees Celsius each.

Twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar recorded highest maximum temperature of 39.6 and 39.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued thunderstorm and lightning alert for several districts in Odisha for the next few days. This is likely to provide some respite to people under these intense heat wave conditions.

As per the latest weather bulletin, the cyclonic circulation over West Bengal & adjoining Bangladesh has moved eastwards. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation extending up to 0.9 km above mean sea level lies over East Uttar Pradesh & neighbourhood.

Under its impact, several districts in Odisha including Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balsore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, and Cuttack will experience light to moderate rainfall in the next 24 hours.

Besides, yellow warning has been issued for the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Kandhamal, Nayagarh and Khurda as there is possibility of thunderstorm and lightning in the next 24 hours.

Day 2 (valid from April 17 to 0830 hrs April 18): Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Nayagarh and dry weather is very likely to prevail over the rest districts of Odisha.

Yellow warning has been sounded as thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Koraput, Rayagada & Gajapati.

Day 3 (from April 18 to 0830 hrs of April 19): Light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of north coastal Odisha and Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nayagarh, Khurda, Ganjam and Puri.

Yellow warning has been issued for North Coastal Odisha, Dhenkanal, Angul, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Kalahandi and Ganjam as thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is expected.
