The Odisha Health Department has begun a statewide crackdown to identify and remove misleading ORS products from the market. The enforcement drive, led by the Drugs Control Directorate for almost two weeks, is aimed at beverages that are being sold as ORS or electrolyte drinks despite not meeting medical standards.
Nearly 7.92 lakh units of such products have already been withdrawn from pharmacies across the state, with the recovered stock valued at approximately Rs 4 crore, officials confirmed.
Health authorities clarified that genuine Oral Rehydration Salts must follow WHO-prescribed composition standards and be produced exclusively by licensed pharmaceutical manufacturers. These medically approved ORS products are generally available through licensed medicine stores.
In contrast, several liquid beverages cleared under FSSAI regulations are being marketed in Odisha as ORS or electrolyte solutions. These drinks, officials noted, do not possess the required clinical formulation and are ineffective for treating dehydration.

The Health Department has stated that the removal drive will continue until misleading stock is eliminated, and penal action will be taken against those involved in manufacturing, distributing or selling such products. Retailers have been advised to ensure compliance and avoid stocking products with deceptive labelling.
