Bhubaneswar: With an aim to make smart city plastic-free, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) rolled out its 'free meal for plastics’ programme today. The initiative was kicked of at all the 11 Aahar centres in Bhubaneswar.

As per the initiative, a person can avail a free meal by exchanging 500 grams of plastic waste at any of the Aahar centres in the capital city.

"Around 17 people were given away coupons for free meals and so far we have collected around 8.5 kg plastic wastes from them," said a worker at an Aahar centre.

The initiative, which is a joint collaboration of the BMC, the UNDP and the Touch Stone Foundation, was launched by BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary from an Aahaar centre near Kalpana Square.
