Odisha Launches Air Evacuation Mission For Stranded Migrants

Bhubnaeswar: With an aim to bring back migrant workers stranded in remote areas of the country amid the COVID-19 lockdown, Odisha government on Wednesday informed that it has launched an air evacuation mission.

The State government has decided that person stranded in remote parts from where train services are not available and also travelling on road is not possible, will be evacuated by air, said a release from the government.

Several persons stranded in Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Assam have been brought by Air Asia flight to Bhubaneswar. A flight carrying migrant workers from Manipur landed at Bhubaneswar Airport at 2.30 PM today.

Another such flight is expected to arrive at the airport late in the evening today carrying 138 migrant workers stranded in Tinsukia, Silchar, Dimapur, Kamarup and Siva Sagar districts of Assam and also in Meghalaya, the govt release said.

"Dedicated teams of officers of the Odisha government intensively interacted with the concerned state governments and also the migrant workers, who are being brought back to the State; completed the formalities required under the COVID-19 protocols and made every arrangement to bring those workers to the concerned airports by picking them up from different pockets of Assam, Manipur and Meghalaya in vehicles," read the release.

The mission will continue till all migrant workers safely return to the State, it added.
