The Odisha government has imposed a seven-month fishing ban along its coast from November 1. The decision aims to ensure the safe breeding and nesting of the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles. The seven-month-long ban on marine fishing along Odisha’s coast will remain effective till May 31.
According to the directive, fishing within 20 kilometres of the coastline has been strictly prohibited to safeguard the rare species. The ban also extends to the river mouths of Rushikulya, Dhamra, and Devi rivers, which are among the three major mass nesting sites along the coast of Odisha for the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles.
However, fishermen can venture into the deep sea or beyond 20 km from the coastline for fishing. While mechanised boats or trawlers are strictly prohibited, traditional fishermen using non-mechanised boats less than 8.5 metres are allowed limited fishing outside the turtle protection zones.
Stringent restrictions have been imposed on turtle congregation, mating, and nesting areas. Every year, Odisha witnesses one of the world’s largest nesting congregations of Olive Ridley turtles. As the turtles' breeding season begins, the seasonal ban is essential for conserving the species and maintaining the delicate balance of the coastal ecosystem.
