The Odisha government on Tuesday approved a whopping Rs 91 crore for the redevelopment of the Koraput bus stand into a state-of-the-art bus terminal, marking a major boost to transport infrastructure in the district.
According to official sources, the new facility will be developed on the model of the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Baramunda Bus Terminal in Bhubaneswar. Construction work is expected to commence once all required procedural formalities are completed.
Bus Stand In Poor State
The existing Koraput bus stand, constructed over three decades ago, has fallen into a poor state due to prolonged wear and tear. To avoid potential mishaps, authorities have decided to demolish the ageing structure.

The bus stand caters to thousands of commuters daily, and increasing vehicular movement has further highlighted the need for a modern and secure terminal. Limited space within the existing premises has also caused difficulties for drivers of long-distance buses, particularly during manoeuvring.
Rs 91cr Sanctioned
In view of these challenges, a review meeting was held around three months ago under the chairmanship of Koraput Collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC), Koraput Municipality and the Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation (OPHWC).
According to a report in The New Indian Express, the sanctioned funds have been released to OPHWC, which will be responsible for executing the project. As per the approved design, a four-storey modern bus terminal will be constructed across 3.64 acres of land. The facility will feature separate entry and exit gates along with passenger-friendly amenities such as shopping zones, a Mission Shakti café, driver rest rooms, drinking water facilities, OSRTC offices and adequate toilet facilities.
Once operational, the new terminal is expected to significantly enhance passenger convenience and improve overall transport connectivity in the region.
