In a heartfelt gesture, a grieving couple from Odisha’s Bhadrak transformed personal tragedy into a mission to save lives. On what would have been their late son’s 27th birthday, the parents of Soumitra Mohanty, who tragically died in a road accident, organised a helmet awareness drive, distributing helmets to two-wheeler riders not wearing one.
Who Was Soumitra Mohanty?
Soumitra, a bright and compassionate medical professional from Bhadrak, had completed his studies in Pondicherry and was serving as a house surgeon. On 5 September 2023, while returning home from duty, his motorcycle collided with a cow.
He was immediately rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him brain dead. Despite receiving intensive care for three days, Soumitra succumbed to his injuries. Reports indicate he was not wearing a helmet at the time a factor that critically worsened his condition.
A Mission Born From Loss
Determined that others should not meet the same fate, Soumitra’s parents, joined by friends and well-wishers, conducted a helmet distribution drive near Bhadrak Dakshinakali Temple. They stopped riders without helmets and handed them one, urging everyone to value life over haste.
Community Stands in Solidarity
The initiative drew support from the Bhadrak District Collector, social workers, and local residents. Together, they echoed a powerful message, a helmet can save lives.
“My son was a medical student, but I lost him in 2023 due to a road accident. His one mistake not wearing a helmet cost him his life. To spread awareness among people and prevent such tragedies, we have begun this helmet drive. On his birthday, we want to share this message of safety,” said Sujata Mohanty, Soumitra’s mother.
