The Odisha government on Sunday rolled out a major development drive in Kalahandi district, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurating and laying foundation stones for 3,612 projects valued at Rs 891.39 crore. The projects were unveiled on the concluding day of the Kalahandi Utsav Ghumura–2026, where the Chief Minister attended as the chief guest.

Officials said the projects span multiple sectors and are aimed at accelerating infrastructure development and improving public amenities across the district. The initiative forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to promote balanced regional growth, particularly in western Odisha.

Religious Visit and Cultural Celebrations

Before the official programme, Chief Minister Majhi visited Maa Manikeswari, the presiding deity of Kalahandi, and offered prayers. He later attended the concluding evening of the Kalahandi Utsav Ghumura–2026 at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium.

As part of the cultural celebrations, a drone show showcasing the art, culture, and heritage of Kalahandi was organised for the first time, drawing large crowds and highlighting the district’s rich traditions.

Major Irrigation and Dam Projects Announced

Addressing the gathering at the Saheed Rendo Majhi stage, the Chief Minister announced the Rawal Utei Irrigation Project for Kalahandi, to be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 3,325 crore. He also assured that a dam would be constructed across the Tel river near Belgaon at a projected cost of Rs 505.98 crore in the near future.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Mohan Majhi said projects worth nearly Rs 950 crore were inaugurated during the event, adding that more than Rs 1,600 crore has been allocated overall for the development of Kalahandi. He further stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Rawal Utei project, estimated at over Rs 3,350 crore, has been prepared and approved by the Central Water Commission.

Boost to Irrigation and Economic Growth

Officials said the launch of these projects and major announcements is expected to significantly enhance irrigation potential, strengthen infrastructure, and drive overall economic growth in Kalahandi district, benefiting farmers and residents alike.
