Odisha on Monday celebrated Mandia Divas, an annual observance held on November 10 to promote millet cultivation and highlight its nutritional and environmental benefits. The state is the first in India to officially recognise and celebrate this day, reaffirming its commitment to revive traditional crops and support farmers.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan arrived in Odisha to participate in the state-level celebration. During his visit, the Minister is scheduled to attend awareness programmes, interact with millet farmers, and visit agricultural fields to review ongoing initiatives promoting millet farming.
Officials said Mandia Divas serves as a key platform to encourage sustainable agriculture, improve rural livelihoods, and position Odisha as a leader in India’s millet mission
Discussions are also scheduled on the implementation of key central initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, the Pulse Mission, and the National Mission on Natural Farming.
Minister Highlights Nutritional Value Of Millets
Speaking to the media after arriving at Bhubaneswar Airport, Chouhan said that mandia, also known as Shri Anna millet, is rich in nutrients and offers multiple health benefits. He noted that millets can be cultivated even in areas with low water availability and poor soil conditions.
Chouhan said, “Mandia or Shri Anna millet is a grain that provides both nourishment and health benefits. It can be grown in less fertile soil with minimal water and helps keep the earth safe for future generations. Following PM Modi’s vision, continuous efforts are being made to promote millet cultivation. I congratulate the Odisha Government for celebrating Mandia Divas and organising this event. We need to increase millet production.”
The state’s celebration of Mandia Divas reflects its continued leadership in encouraging sustainable and nutritious farming practices.
