In a heart-warming tale that seems straight out of a movie, an Indian-origin woman settled in the United States returned to her birthplace after 26 years to celebrate a deeply emotional milestone.
Sudhanya Tan, who was adopted by an American couple as a child, celebrated her first wedding anniversary at Basundhara Orphanage in Cuttack, the same place that sheltered her as an infant.
Left In Orphanage
Sudhanya was left at the Basundhara Orphanage in 1994 when she was just 10 months old. Five years later, in 1999, she was adopted by a couple from Carolina, USA, and her life changed completely. Growing up in the United States, Sudhanya pursued her studies and went on to become a nurse. She later married Harsh Dua, an Indian-origin man, on October 27, 2024.
However, despite living abroad for more than two decades, her emotional connection to her roots remained unbroken. To mark her first wedding anniversary, Sudhanya, along with her husband, family, and close relatives, decided to visit the orphanage in Cuttack — the place that gave her a new identity and future.
Tears Of Happiness
“I get to share my story with so many people, especially with the people closest to me like my in-laws, my husband, my parents and my child who is coming along. Being here and seeing my origin is just incredible,” said a teary-eyed Sudhanya.
Upon her arrival, the orphanage premises were filled with joy and emotion. The environment was decorated with lights, music, and celebrations as Basundhara welcomed its long-lost daughter. Tears of happiness flowed as Sudhanya revisited her childhood home, expressing gratitude for the care and love she once received there.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including well-known doctors, the District Child Protection Officer, CWC members, and other prominent guests, who joined in to bless the couple on their special day.
Sudhanya’s story serves as a touching reminder that no matter how far one travels or how much time passes, the bond with one’s motherland and roots remains eternal.
