Odia jatra actor Piyush Tripathy resumed stage performances on Thursday night despite an ongoing contractual dispute involving jatra troupes, stating that he has not received any official Court notice restraining him from performing.
Tripathy appeared at the Singha Bahini Jatra stage in Tangi, under Cuttack district in Odisha, triggering renewed debate within jatra circles over the enforcement of restrictions linked to the dispute.
Actor Cites Lack of Official Communication
Speaking to reporters, Piyush said he would decide his future course of action only after receiving formal communication from the court. Reiterating his faith in the judicial process, he maintained that he was unaware of any legal order barring his participation.
“I have not received any court notice yet. Once I do, I will act accordingly. I have full faith in the judiciary,” the actor said.
Background of the Contract Dispute
According to sources, Piyush Tripathy had entered into a contractual agreement with the Surjya Mandir Jatra party, which remains valid until June 2026. However, before the expiry of that contract, he reportedly signed a separate agreement with Singha Bahini Jatra for the 2025–26 season.
The overlapping contracts led to a dispute, following which the Jatra Owners’ Association imposed a one-year break on the actor from performing.
Legal Move and Association Action
Despite the association’s decision, Piyush performed on stage on January 5, prompting the owner of Surjya Mandir Jatra to approach the court. The matter remains sub judice, even as the ongoing jatra season is yet to conclude.
Multiple Troupes Performing in Tangi
Currently, several jatra troupes, including Singha Bahini, Ranga Mahal, Tulasi and Shibani, are reportedly staging performances in Tangi featuring the actor. This has raised questions over compliance with court proceedings and the enforcement of the association’s directive.
Actor Calls for Resolution Through Dialogue
Piyush Tripathy has described the dispute as the result of misunderstandings and ego clashes, expressing hope that the issue can be resolved through dialogue rather than prolonged legal confrontation.
“I believe the matter can be resolved amicably. I will wait for the Court’s decision and abide by it,” he added.
