Amid the counting of votes for the Nuapada Assembly bypoll, Congress candidate Ghasiram Majhi today lashed out at the ruling BJP, accusing the party of ‘blatant misuse of money power’ to influence the election outcome.
Majhi, who is currently trailing by over 50,000 votes and placed in the third position, said the mandate was being ‘bought, not earned.’
Jay Dholakia Leading By Huge Margin
BJP candidate Jay Dholakia has taken a commanding lead with more than 73,000 votes, but Majhi insisted that the numbers did not reflect public faith, rather ‘cash-driven voting.’
Speaking to media, Majhi alleged, “The ruling party BJP has bought the voters with money. I have worked so much for the people, but if you see Jay Dholakia, he has no contribution.”
He claimed that voters were paid cash to vote for the BJP. “If you can give money, you can get votes. Nuapada people failed to recognise their own son of the soil. Each voter was given Rs 5,000,” he said, insisting that the electorate was swayed by financial inducements rather than development or performance.
No Help from Top Brass of Congress: Majhi
Majhi further alleged that the BJP targeted Congress polling agents as well. “Our agents were bought by the BJP. Though all our campaigning went well, we faced a severe financial crunch. I did not receive any help or support from central leaders,” he said, expressing disappointment at the party’s internal support system.
He also blamed the prevailing political culture, where according to him, voters prioritise money over credibility. “People are not recognising hard work; they are giving votes only after getting money. Paisa to khuda nahin hai, khuda se kam nahin hai,” he remarked, highlighting what he described as a worrying trend.

With the BJP maintaining a decisive lead and the Congress slipping further behind, the final outcome appears almost certain, though counting is still underway.
Meanwhile, the BJP is yet to comment on the allegations of the Congress candidate.
