Bhubaneswar: No orders have been issued regarding cancellation of marriage ceremonies or subsequent receptions in view of the Coronavirus outbreak, clarified the Commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Prem Chandra Choudhury.

Briefing media on the latest guidelines issued by the state government, Choudhury said, “The State government has nowhere put any prohibition on marriages. However, people are advised to refrain from arranging large social gatherings. Moreover, they should avoid going to public places, unless there is an emergency.”

Choudhury further reiterated that no orders were issued to close down shopping malls, however like all other places, people should also exercise restraint in gathering in numbers and follow sanitization guidelines.

Shedding light on the ongoing exercise to make people and business organisations follow Coronavirus guidelines, Choudhury said, “We have formed three squads to check hoarding of masks and sanitizers by unscrupulous businessmen. The squads will make surprise visits to shops and godowns and they have been empowered to book any suspected hoarder under the Essential Commodities Act.”

Prem Chandra Choudhury further requested all the offices and business organisations in Bhubaneswar to make hand-washing mandatory for employees as well as visitors before entry into their premises. Acting upon CM Naveen Patnaik’s request, both the BMC and BDA (Bhubaneswar Development Authority) in Bhubaneswar have enforced ‘no spitting’ rule on their office premises.

A Bhubaneswar resident, who has the Thread Ceremony of his son scheduled on 22 March, said, “All the people should adhere to guidelines issued by the government as it is for everyone's safety. We have finalised the day three months before, so can’t reschedule the event now. We will ensure the ceremony is observed with only close family members and we will try and provide masks and hand sanitizers to our guests.”
