No motorable road: Pregnant woman carried 3 km after ambulance fails to reach Gajapati village

A pregnant woman in Manidiha village under Mohana block of Gajapati district in Odisha endured a harrowing experience on Saturday after an ambulance was unable to reach her home due to the absence of a motorable road. The incident has once again exposed the persistent issue of poor rural connectivity in the region.

According to reports, Tara Raita, wife of Krishna Raita, went into labour and her family immediately contacted authorities for an ambulance. However, the vehicle got stuck midway as the road leading to the village is unfit for vehicular movement.

Villagers Carry Expectant Mother

With no other option left, villagers and relatives carried Tara Raita for nearly three kilometres. They transported her from Manidiha to Baharatampa village, navigating difficult terrain and even crossing a brook before reaching the stranded ambulance.

After the strenuous journey, she was shifted to the PHC at Dengausta village in neighbouring Ganjam district, where she was admitted for medical treatment.

Residents of Manidiha expressed deep concern over repeated hardships caused by the lack of basic road infrastructure. They alleged that despite several appeals to the administration, their demand for a motorable road remains unmet, continuing to put lives at risk during medical emergencies.
