In a move reinforcing Odisha's commitment to promoting Odia as the primary language of administration, the state government on Wednesday has directed that all official work in government offices must be carried out exclusively in the Odia language. The General Administration Department has issued a formal notification making it mandatory for offices at all levels, from block and district offices to state-level departments, to conduct official business in Odia.
According to the directive, all notices, notifications, official correspondence, and related communications issued from government offices must be drafted in Odia. The order applies uniformly to all departments, departmental headquarters, district collectors’ offices, subordinate offices, and government-run institutions.
Action Against Non-Compliance
Officials failing to comply with the directive will be warned, and if required, show-cause notices will be issued against them. The government has made it clear that strict adherence to the order is mandatory, leaving little scope for deviation.
Wide Applicability Across Institutions
The instructions will also apply to government-managed bodies such as corporations, municipal institutions, and autonomous organisations operating under the state government.
Support for Implementation
To facilitate smooth implementation, the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department will take necessary steps to provide all required support to government offices.
Reinforcing the State Language
This move aims to strengthen its presence in governance and ensure accessibility for the public.
