The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has intensified its probe into the explosion that rocked Sundarpada in Odisha's Bhubaneswar last month, closely examining CCTV footage as part of its ongoing investigation.

The blast occurred at Azad Nagar under Airfield police limits on January 27, 2026, leaving four persons grievously injured. Among them was alleged history-sheeter Sehanbaz Mallik, who later died while undergoing treatment. His mother also succumbed to her injuries before her statement could be recorded. Two other injured persons remain under medical care, and their statements have not yet been formally recorded.

Probe Focuses On Explosive Source, Conspiracy Angle

According to sources, the NIA is attempting to ascertain how highly powerful explosive material allegedly reached those involved before the blast. CCTV footage dated January 28, which is circulating on social media, shows a sudden loud explosion followed by a massive burst of flames from a building in Azad Nagar. Thick black smoke can be seen engulfing the area, prompting residents to rush out of their homes in panic.

As per standard operating procedure, whenever a blast occurs in a region where the NIA has a branch office, the agency examines whether the incident is part of a larger conspiracy. The probe reportedly focused on two primary aspects: the role of the main accused and his fiancée, and the possibility of a wider conspiracy. However, sources said no such links have been established so far.

While initial reports suggested that samples of RDX had been recovered from the blast site, the State Forensic Science Laboratory’s latest tests reportedly found no traces of RDX residue.

Sources further indicated that the investigation has not made significant progress due to the lack of eyewitnesses and limited recorded statements. All those directly involved in the incident were injured in the explosion.

Local Police Continue Investigation

A case in connection with the blast has been registered at Airfield Police Station, and local police continue to investigate the matter.
