‘Nari Adalats’ to come up in Odisha villages to bring speedy justice

In a significant development, Nari Adalats (women’s courts) would be set up in villages across Odisha, with women volunteers opening mediation centres at the grassroots level.

These volunteers will be trained and officially recognised as Nyaya Sakhis (Justice Friends), Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida announced on Saturday.

The information was shared while inaugurating the Nari Adalat (Women’s Court) programme in 10 aspirational districts of the state. The initiative aims to provide speedy justice to women and enhance legal awareness at the community level.

The programme is being implemented by the Women and Child Development Department, and the objective of the initiative is to expedite justice for women.

 Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan was also present at the event, while senior officials from 10 districts participated through virtual mode.

"Under the much-awaited women's courts initiative, women will open mediation centres in villages. They will be the volunteers of justice. They will be provided training and identified as Nyaya Sakhis. The courts of the villages will be run by the women in Anganwadi and community centres. The first centre of justice for dowry and domestic violence-related issues will be women's courts," said Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida.
