Bhubaneswar: The Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Odisha issued as many as 57,238 Learner's Licence (LL) in just 18 days in the aftermath of the implementation of the amended Motor Vehicles Act, 2019 on September 1.
As per the State Transport Authority (STA), 57,238 learner's licence were issued to motorists between September 1 and September 19, 2019 while 1.41 lakh applications are still in queue to obtain a driving licence in the State.
In comparison, senior officials informed that only 3.53 lakh driving licences were issued in 2018.
It is pertinent to mention here that the government has opened five more centres to facilitate issuance of driving licenses- 4 additional centres have been set up in Bhubaneswar apart from RTO-1 and RTO-2 while one more centre has been opened in Khurda.
Ever since the amended road rules came into effect, serpentine queues were witnessed at RTOs across Odisha.
RTO-II in Bhubaneswar issued highest number of 6,344 learner's licences, followed by RTO-1 with 5,005 DLs. RTO Cuttack and RTO Chandikhole issued 3,513 and 3,243 learner's licence between September 1 and September 19.
The State Transport department on the other hand has increased the number of slots for Learners License & Driving License tests while RTOs have been directed to open office even on government holidays. Reportedly, the temporary camps have been set up at BMC office at Kalpana Square, Saheed Nagar, OSRTC building at AG Square, BMC Zonal office at Nalco square and Town hall in Khurda to provide learner's licence to applicants on a first-come-first-serve basis.
