Cuttack: As many as 20 passengers were reportedly injured, five of them critically, after Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Express derailed near Nergundi railway station in Cuttack on Thursday.
The mishap occurred at around 7 am. According to initial report, about eight coaches of the super fast express derailed after hitting a guard van of a goods train between Salagaon and Nergundi possibly due to dense fog. While five coaches derailed, three other coaches partially displaced from the tracks.

Chief Public Relations Officer (PRO) of East Coast Railway (ECoR), JP Mishra confirmed that 20 passengers were injured of which five received major injuries. There was no report of any casualty in the mishap and all passengers are out of danger, he added.

Fire services personnel and ambulances immediately reached the spot to carry out the rescue operation. However, the rescue operations were initially affected by the foggy conditions. The injured passengers were shifted to a local hospital while five critically injured passengers shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital.

The five critically injured passengers have been identified as Jitendra Padhi, Puspanjali Jatwar, Purnachandra Nayak, Sarat Chandra Behera and Aswini Kumar Lenka.

The ECoR has issued helpline numbers 0671-1072 (Cuttack), 0674-1072 (Khurda Road), 18003457401/402 (Bhubaneswar headquarters), 0674-1072 (Bhubaneswar station) and 06752-1072 (Puri) for information on the accident and injured passengers apart from rescue & relief operations.

A passenger, Prabhu Tripathy, who had occupied seat No 26 of the B1 coach informed about the mishap through a tweet and sought help for passengers.
In response to the tweet, Indian railway Seva said that efforts are being made for necessary assistance to rescue the passengers.
Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan expressed concern over the derailment of Mumbai-Bhubaneswar LTT Express in Cuttack and prayed for early recovery of those injured in the mishap.

Meanwhile, the railway authorities said a high-level probe will be initiated into the mishap to ascertain whether the train derailed due to poor visibility or any other reason.
Abhai Kumar Rai, Commissioner of Railway Safety, South Eastern Circle, Kolkata under the ministry of Civil Aviation will hold a statutory inquiry into the accident.
As per a release of the Divisional Railway Manager of ECoR, Khurda, "Rai will hold a statutory inquiry on January 18 at 10 AM. The inquiry will commence at officers' rest house at Cuttack (50 meters from platform No.1 entrance of Cuttack railway station) till completion in connection with 'rear collision of 12879 Express (LTT-BBS Express) against the brake van of goods train. Any member of the public having knowledge relating to this accident and matters connected therewith and desiring to give evidence may do so at above places on the date of inquiry or write to The Commissioner of Railway Safety, South Eastern Circle, 14- Strand Road,-12th floor, Koilaghat Street, Kolkata-700001."
