According to sources, the incident began over ‘not giving way’ on the road involving a bike rider and an auto-rickshaw driver near the online auto parking zone close to Airport Square. The argument quickly turned ugly when the bike rider allegedly called in 10 to 15 youths, who arrived armed with iron rods, sharp weapons, and sticks. They allegedly attacked whoever came in their way, including auto-rickshaw drivers.
The apparent violence intensified as more auto drivers rushed to the spot, leading to face-offs between two groups even in the presence of police. An auto driver, identified as Bikash Sahoo, was allegedly assaulted, threatened with death, and left seriously injured. He was later rescued and admitted to Capital Hospital for treatment.
Following the fatal incident, several members of Smart City Online Auto Drivers’ Association gheraoed the Airport Police Station, demanding strict action against the wrongdoers. The situation raised serious concerns over law and order, road rage, and public safety. Police are probing the matter and reviewing evidence related to the violent clash.
“There were three bike-borne youths. Initially, the youths beat an auto-rickshaw driver with a helmet. When 8-10 supporters of the driver questioned them about the incident, they called their group to the spot,” an eyewitness, Rakesh Muduli, said.
“The youths attacked everyone with iron rods and lathis,” the eyewitness added.
