Angul: A perfect day of wedding celebration ended in a tragedy for a family of Bajapur village after the brother of bride-to-be died in a road mishap hours before the auspicious ceremony. Gut-wrenching as it may sound, the girl Sugyani (name changed) was still married off by her uncle’s family at a Shiva temple in nearby Kusuni village, and at the same time her brother Swadhin Pradhan's funeral rites were conducted at a crematorium close to the temple.

Preparations were over; everything was set for marriage on the 3rd of March. Family, friends and relatives were soaked in celebrations for the big day. But fate had something else in store for them.

Making all arrangements at the venue, Swadhin went to Rairakhol weekly market to buy essential commodities for the wedding function. Unfortunately during his return, his vehicle collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw and he died on the spot. Some passersby rescued and rushed him to a hospital closeby but it was too late.

While everyone was awaiting Swadhin’s arrival, at around 2 pm, they heard that he was no more.

As Swadhin’s mortal remains reached his house, a spontaneous wail of despair pierced through the stunned silence. The situation was such that Sugyani’s uncle did not have the courage to call off wedding and went ahead with the rituals at the Shiva temple. Tear-jerking scenes were witnessed; Sugyani kept sobbing inconsolably at the marriage altar as she could see her brother being taken for cremation.

Swadhin lost his father years ago and since then he had been eking out a living by manufacturing and selling ‘beedi’ (a tobacco product). Despite being the lone breadwinner for his family, Swadhin was capable enough to marry off two of his sisters. Sugyani was the third and youngest.

His loss is irreplaceable for his three sisters and mother who is now home-alone and fighting back tears.
