A hardcore Maoist cadre identified as ‘Prabhu’ surrendered on Tuesday before the Rourkela Police in Sundargarh district, marking a significant development in the region’s anti-ultra efforts to curb the outlawed CPI (M) groups.

According to police sources, Prabhu hails from the Chhotanagara locality of neighbouring Jharkhand and was actively involved in Maoist operations. He was active for the last two years as a hardcore Red Rebel leader. He was just 18 years old and had joined the Maoist group in 2014. He had expertise in planting dynamite.
Prabhu was involved in two major cases registered at Bisra Police Station in the city.
Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani stated that the surrendered cadre had links to several Maoist activities and incidents in the past. He was also a member of a guerrilla Maoist camp, where he reportedly participated in organisational and operational tasks.
Police authorities shared this information during a press conference held today, highlighting that the surrender could help security agencies gain further insight into Maoist networks operating in the Odisha-Jharkhand border regions.
Officials added that Prabhu is believed to have been involved in multiple incidents, though detailed investigations are underway. The surrender is being seen as a positive outcome of sustained police outreach and pressure against extremist groups in the region.
"Odisha Government has a better policy for the Maoists to surrender. As a result of this, a hardcore Maoist from the bordering regions named Prabhu laid down arms today before the Rourkela Police. We hope that other Maoist cadres involved in the ultra group will also surrender soon,” Northern Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Brijesh Kumar Rai, stated to mediapersons.
Worth mentioning, earlier in another incident, two prominent Maoist operatives, namely Unaga Kalamu alias Kishore and Mase Madvi, had surrendered before the Southern Range Inspector General (IG) of Police Niti Shekhar in Kandhamal in November last year.
“Two Maoists have surrendered before us today. They were party members of the BGN division. The operatives, namely Unaga Kalamu alias Kishore and Mase Madvi, hail from Chhattisgarh. The Maoist duo was from Sukma district but was active here (in Phulbani),” the Southern Range IGP had said on November 16.
