In a significant development from Odisha’s Malkangiri district, villagers in the Swabhiman area on Thursday have demolished more than 20 memorial pillars built by Maoists. The structures, erected in memory of deceased Maoist comrades, were pulled down by local residents across Mathili, Kalimela, and Khairput blocks. The action was taken as Naxal activities in the region have declined considerably, paving the way for the return of peace.

The memorial pillars had stood as reminders of past Maoist presence in the region. However, with changing ground realities and reduced extremist influence, villagers collectively dismantled the structures. The move reflects a visible shift in the atmosphere of the Swabhiman region, which was once affected by insurgent activities.
