A major fire gutted a house in Khallikote under Odisha’s Ganjam district in the early hours of Saturday, reducing property worth several lakhs to ashes. The incident took place at Dharakot Sahi around 3 am.
The blaze broke out at the residence of Dillip Khuntia. While the exact cause is yet to be confirmed, preliminary reports point to a suspected short circuit. Two rooms were completely destroyed in the fire, engulfing household items, including a refrigerator, cooler, important documents, and cash.
Sources said cash amounting to several lakhs and gold ornaments kept for the daughter’s wedding were also reduced to ashes in the mishap. Fortunately, no loss of life has been reported.
Firefighters Control Blaze
As per reports, the Fire Department office, located about 10 km from the site, reached the spot within half an hour. Before the flames could engulf a third room, firefighters brought the situation under control.
The family members, who were asleep when the fire broke out, rushed out of the house after noticing the flames and immediately alerted the Fire Department. Neighbours also woke up and joined efforts to contain the blaze until firefighters arrived at the spot.

The blaze was reportedly intense and had the potential to spread to nearby houses. However, no loss of life was reported.
