Mahima temple in Dhenkanal to get Rs 171 crore makeover, Odisha chief secy reviews project

Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg on Wednesday reviewed the progress of the ambitious redevelopment project of the Mahima temple at Joranda in Dhenkanal district, which is being undertaken to transform the revered Mahima Peetha into a major spiritual and cultural centre.

During the review meeting, detailed discussions were held on the construction of a grand and imposing temple structure that will encompass the existing Shunya Mandir, the central shrine of Mahima Dharma. 

According to The New Indian Express report, the proposed design aims to preserve the sanctity of the original temple while enhancing its architectural grandeur. Officials also deliberated on the development of several allied structures within the temple complex, including the Akhanda Jyoti shrine, bhajan mandap, prayer hall and the pushkarini, or sacred temple pond.

Special emphasis was laid on improving the environmental sustainability, landscaping and overall visual appeal of the temple premises.
The redevelopment project was initially approved in 2023 by the previous Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government at an estimated cost of Rs 112 crore. However, after a detailed reassessment, the BJP-led state government revised the project cost to Rs 171 crore in June 2025 to incorporate additional facilities and upgraded infrastructure. The entire project is slated to be completed within a period of three years.

Official sources said the meeting also reviewed plans for a modern kitchen, pilgrim rest houses and organised parking facilities to accommodate the growing number of devotees. The architectural and development plans have been prepared after extensive consultations with sadhus and followers of Mahima Dharma, in accordance with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s directives to ensure holistic and inclusive development of the historic Mahima Peetha.
