Low pressure to intensify into depression on Dussehra, heavy to very heavy rain likely to lash Odisha

A low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression by Dussehra, triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha. IMD has issued warnings for multiple districts as the system moves towards Odisha-Andhra coast.

With an upper air cyclonic circulation likely to emerge into north Andaman Sea on Tuesday, under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over central parts of Bay of Bengal around October 1 (tomorrow), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted.

It is likely to move west northwestwards and intensify into a Depression over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal around October 2 (Dussehra Day). It is also likely to continue to move westnorthwestwards and cross the south Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts around the morning hours of October 3 [Bhasani (Durga idol immersion) Day].

IMD regional centre in Bhubaneswar has issued an Orange Warning in five districts of the State, which is valid from 0830 hrs IST of October 2 to 0830 hrs IST of October 3.

In its mid-day bulletin, the IMD stated, “Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Kandhamal on October 2 (Thursday).”

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning: (Be Aware)- Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri.

Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj ,Nayagarh, and Kandhamal.

For Wednesday (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 01.10.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 02.10.2025)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Coastal Odisha, South Interior Odisha and at many places over the districts of North Interior Odisha.

Yellow Warning: (Be Aware)- Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal.

Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
