Following warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the district administration imposed a restriction on sea bathing from Monday to Wednesday as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of tourists and locals.

While most visitors have complied with the safety advisory, the assault incident has drawn sharp criticism from the public, with many condemning the couple’s behaviour towards an on-duty lifeguard carrying out safety instructions.

Authorities have reportedly tightened surveillance and deployed additional lifeguards and police personnel across key stretches of the beach to prevent further violations.

Meanwhile, all 14 sectors of Puri beach have been declared red zones. With the sea turning increasingly rough under the cyclone’s influence, tourists have been strictly prohibited from entering the water.

Lifeguard Response

The lifeguard, who was attacked, alleged, “A couple was attempting to enter the water, and we repeatedly warned them not to do so. As the sea is rough due to the approaching cyclone and the waves are stronger, we advised them to stay away. However, they argued and later assaulted me with slippers.”

He further added, “I reported the incident to my seniors, and they assured me that the matter would be investigated and necessary action would follow. Usually, tourists cooperate when told not to enter the sea, but a few create disturbances.”

Police intervene to restore order

According to reports, several tourists had tried to enter the water despite warnings from lifeguards on Tuesday. Following this, police were informed and reached the beach to bring the situation under control.

Vighnesh Behera, in-charge of the FDR Outpost in Puri, said, “The wind speed and wave height have increased. Red flags have been put up across all sectors due to Cyclone Montha, and awareness is being created among tourists. We stopped visitors from entering the water, and with police assistance, beach entry has now been restricted.”

On the assault incident, he added, “We will review the matter with our staff members and take appropriate steps.”
