Recently, lady journalist Sheela Pattanayak and her friend Sipika Nayak lost their lives on the spot after their scooter reportedly skidded on sand lying on the road on NH-316 before being hit by a bus. Shockingly, despite the tragedy, sand continues to remain scattered at multiple locations along the highway, posing a constant threat to commuters.

A visit to the accident site revealed glaring negligence. Personal belongings of the deceased, including footwear, spectacles, and a water bottle, were still found at the spot, underscoring the gravity of the incident. Locals allege that rampant and unchecked sand transportation has been continuing for years, allegedly with the backing of corrupt officials. However, due to fear, residents are not naming those involved in the illegal trade.

“The sand has been lying there since last eight days. I cannot tell anything as I’m not from here,” stated a resident.

Former MLA Rudra Maharathy has demanded immediate closure of the sand ghats, while BJP MLA Ashrit Pattnaik stated that the government is aware of the issue.

District Collector Assures Probe

“Is the government also involved in the illegal sand smuggling by the sand mafia? When will the illegal sand smuggling in Pipli stop? I want the government to be answerable to the common people,” stated Rudra.

On the other hand, when contacted, BJP MLA Ashrit said, “On the orders of the government and the District Collector, a police raid is going on every night. Four to five vehicles are seized by police every night.”

Three days after the incident, public outrage continues to grow, with environmental activists demanding Rs 1 crore compensation for each victim’s family.

While NHAI is yet to issue a response, the Puri District Collector confirmed that a probe committee has been formed and action will be taken based on its findings.
