Kolkata police arrests Bargarh jeweller over nonpayment of dues

Kolkata Police on Friday night arrested Hemant Verma, a businessman and owner of Danwar Jewellers in Odisha’s Bargarh district, in connection with alleged financial irregularities involving gold jewellery transactions. The arrest was made with the assistance of Bargarh town police following complaints lodged by several Kolkata-based jewellers.

According to police sources, Verma had allegedly purchased gold jewellery worth several lakh of rupees from jewellers in Kolkata but failed to clear the payment dues. It was stated that he regularly sourced gold jewellery from Kolkata and sold it in Bargarh. Over time, multiple traders approached the police, claiming that payments for the supplied jewellery remained unpaid despite repeated reminders.

Following the registration of complaints, Kolkata Police traced Verma’s location to Bargarh and apprehended him with the help of local police late on Friday night. He was produced before a court shortly thereafter and was taken to Kolkata for further legal proceedings.

Investigation Underway

Kolkata Police officials said Verma had been asked on several occasions to settle the outstanding dues but did not comply. Investigators are now examining whether the gold was procured for legitimate business transactions or if there was an intent to defraud the suppliers.

The incident has triggered concern among traders and residents in Bargarh, with discussions emerging around the need for caution and verification in high-value commercial dealings, particularly in the jewellery trade.
