Koida town in Odisha’s Sundargarh district is witnessing an intense spell of cold weather, with minimum temperatures reportedly dipping below 8 degrees Celsius, disrupting daily life across the mining belt region.
The sharp drop in temperature has made conditions particularly uncomfortable during early morning and evening hours, significantly reducing outdoor movement in residential areas surrounding the mines. Residents said the chill has intensified over the past few days, making it difficult to step out after sunset.
Locals have begun adjusting their daily routines to cope with the cold. Outdoor activities, including morning walks and exercise, are being delayed as people avoid exposure during the coldest hours of the day.
Outdoor Activities Delayed
A local resident said Koida is experiencing a harsher winter compared to previous years. “Earlier, we used to go out around 5 am for exercise. Now, due to the cold, we are stepping out only around 7 am. After our routine exercise, we also play cricket to stay active,” he said.
Another resident said early morning activities have become challenging for many, especially the elderly. “We cannot come to the field before 8 am. Senior citizens are facing considerable difficulty in this weather. Still, many people try to come out daily to exercise, while others gather for tea to cope with the cold,” he said.

The persistent low temperatures have particularly affected senior citizens and people engaged in outdoor work. Residents said the use of warm clothing and hot beverages has become essential as the cold spell continues in the region.
