Kandhamal gears up for Christmas as churches, markets and administration step up preparations

With Christmas drawing near, Kandhamal district is witnessing heightened festive activity as the Christian community prepares to celebrate the birth of Lord Jesus Christ with devotion and enthusiasm. In Phulbani and other parts of the district, churches are being decorated while rehearsals for carols, songs and cultural programmes are underway.

Churches Decked Out, Worship in Full Swing

Decoration work at churches in Phulbani is nearing completion. Rangoli designs have been laid, premises cleaned, and colourful lights installed to illuminate church buildings. Devotees have begun lighting candles and offering prayers, eagerly awaiting Christmas Day. Practice sessions for traditional Christmas songs and dance performances have also commenced, adding to the festive spirit.

Tanmay Nayak, a member of the Christian community in Phulbani, said celebrations will begin ahead of Christmas Day.

“Christmas celebrations will start on December 23 with a carol service, followed by Christmas tree preparations on December 24. The main prayer will be held on December 25, with evening programmes continuing till the New Year,” he said.

Father Journal Singh of Phulbani Catholic Church said preparations are being made to ensure a joyful and peaceful celebration.

“We have held meetings to plan the celebrations across the district. The Christian community is excited and looks forward to observing Christmas with devotion and happiness,” he said.

Markets Buzzing, Administration On Alert

Local markets in Kandhamal are abuzz with activity, with decorative items in high demand as residents shop to decorate their homes. Meanwhile, the district administration has stepped up preparations to ensure law and order during the festive season.

A peace committee meeting chaired by Kandhamal District Collector Vedbhushan was held recently, with participation from representatives of all communities, BDOs from 12 blocks, Tehsildars, police officials, IICs and intellectuals.

“We are making all necessary arrangements to ensure peaceful and harmonious Christmas and New Year celebrations. People are advised to remain cautious, avoid reacting to rumours on social media and trust the administration,” the Collector said.

Kandhamal SP Harish B.C. assured adequate security arrangements during the festivities.

“Police forces are deployed during all major occasions, and Christmas will be no exception. We are committed to maintaining peace and harmony,” he said.

Suranjan Nayak, a representative of the Christian Social Welfare Society, said the annual coordination meeting was conducted to discuss measures for safe and peaceful celebrations.

With Christmas just days away, enthusiasm and anticipation are running high among Christians in Kandhamal as they prepare to welcome the festival with joy, faith and devotion.
