Jatra dancer Nisha Maharana seeks anticipatory bail amid arrest threat

Jatra dancer Nisha Maharana is facing the threat of arrest after allegedly performing an obscene dance at a Jatra stage in Chandanbhati area of Bolangir district. The popular social media sensation has now approached the Orissa High Court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the case.

According to police sources, the incident took place on January 12 during a Jatra performance, where Nisha allegedly displayed objectionable gestures and performed an indecent dance, leading to public outrage. Following the incident, ASI Ranjit Pradhan of Chandanbhati outpost lodged a complaint at Sadar police station.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections and arrested two event organisers for allowing the controversial performance. A special women police team from Bolangir has been camping in Bhubaneswar for the past two days to trace and arrest Nisha Maharana.

The case has triggered debate over obscenity in public cultural programmes and the responsibility of organisers to maintain decency during such performances. Meanwhile, Nisha’s legal counsel argued that she is being unfairly targeted and sought protection from arrest until the investigation is completed.

Meanwhile, police officials stated that further action will be taken based on court directions and the outcome of the investigation.
