Political tension on Tuesday flared up in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district after the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) alleged that members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were involved in a brutal attack on one of its party workers.
According to reports, BJD social media activist Rashmi Parija was allegedly assaulted late on Monday night and struck on the head with a wooden plank. The incident took place in Jagatsinghpur town, leaving her seriously injured. Rashmi was immediately rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, BJD MP Sulta Deo condemned the incident, calling it “a disturbing act in a civilized society.”
She alleged that the attack was an attempt to silence someone for expressing opinions on social media. “There was an attempt to kill a woman simply for voicing her views online. Is this not a sign of lawlessness?” she questioned.

Deo also claimed that a false case had been filed against Rashmi Parija based on her online posts.
Meanwhile, the BJP has denied the allegations, asserting that a people’s government is functioning in the state and rejecting claims of political intimidation.
The party also urged the BJD MP to “remember the incidents that occurred before 2024,” hinting at past controversies under the BJD’s governance.
As the political blame game intensifies, police investigations are underway to ascertain the exact cause and perpetrators of the attack.
