Bhubaneswar: Women are considered a harbinger of life as they are the humans who give birth. But the same women can become the agents of cruelty and killing, particularly in distressing times of Covid-19, is beyond comprehension. And more so, when the cruelty is inflicted on an animal that doesn’t have the power to resist, retort or the voice to protest. In a gruesome act of torment, a woman in Bhubaneswar has been the reason why a pregnant stray dog lost its life.
According to a complaint filed at Lingaraj Police Station today, a woman of Samantarapur in Bhubaneswar reportedly beat a stray dog who was pregnant till it fell down. The dog, though rescued, couldn’t survive after being operated and treated. However, it gave birth to two premature puppies, of which one is struggling to survive while the other died.
On Monday, the Animal Welfare Trust Ekamra, an organisation that has been relentlessly working towards rescue and rehabilitation of animals in the state for over a few years now, receiving information about a dog lying near Samantarapur area, rushed to the spot and rescued her. The dog was in a miserable condition and could hardly move.
"She (April, the AWTE had renamed it) was unable to lift herself and crying with immense pain. We rescued the dog and found that she was pregnant. The treatment started immediately and C-Section surgery performed to save the mother. She delivered two premature pups of which one died and the other is critical. The mother too succumbed after hours of suffering," mentioned Purabi Patra of AWTE in her police complaint.
According to sources, some neighours in the locality, on condition of anonymity, informed that the dog was in a pitiable condition after being beaten by a woman and her neighbour.
The animal welfare organisation has demanded stringent action against the accused woman and her neighbour for involvement in this brutal inhumane act.

Bhubaneswar Witnessed Another Brutal Killing On April 26
Two days back, Chairperson of 'Speak For Animals' Kusal Biswas had lodged an FIR at Chandrasekharpur PS seeking action against one Suresh Digal for allegedly beating a dog to death.
As per the complaint, Biswas and his team were on their daily feeding drive when they found a dead pup lying opposite Federal Bank ATM on Infocity Road here. His legs were tied up, eyes prolapsed, skull and jaws were broken while mouth and ears ooze blood, Biswas stated in his complaint.
He immediately informed Chandrasekharpur SI Gajanan Saha who arrived at the spot to initiate an investigation. Suspecting something fishy, the cop interrogated two persons asleep outside Tandooriwaala restaurant, and one of them admitted to having attacked the pup with plywood and bricks.
Reports claimed that the accused has been arrested and court-forwarded.
Condemning the act, SFA Chairperson Kusal Biswas said, "The way this puppy was tied and killed shows how inhumane humans can be. These acts let down humanity and we must never stand and watch when such heinous acts are committed."
Notably, the Odisha government had sanctioned Rs 54 lakh for the purpose of feeding the stray animals during the first phase of the nationwide lockdown till April 14. As the lockdown was extended further till May 3, the government again approved a release of additional funds of Rs 80.18 lakh to urban local bodies for feeding stray dogs and other animals.
