To carry out the rescue and tranquilization operation, three special teams have been constituted, drawing personnel and experts from the Chandaka range, Nandankanan Biological Park, and Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT).

According to forest officials, the elephant has been moving around the Bhalunka forest and its surrounding areas. Continuous monitoring is being carried out with the help of drones to track its movement and ensure that the animal is safely located without escalating the risk to nearby villages. Officials said the elephant’s upper left leg is visibly swollen, raising serious concerns about a possible injury or infection.

The exact cause of the swelling, whether due to a gunshot wound, an arrow injury, or a severe infection, can only be determined after the animal is successfully tranquillized and examined by veterinary experts.

Earlier, during an attempt to track and contain the elephant, it reportedly became aggressive and chased forest personnel. In the incident, a forester and two other forest staff members sustained injuries.

The Forest Department has appealed to local residents to remain alert, avoid venturing into forested areas, and cooperate with officials.
