India-US trade deal opens new export avenues for Odisha’s textiles

The recent India–United States trade agreement has opened up fresh opportunities for Odisha, particularly in the textile and apparel sector. From traditional handloom products to modern ready-made garments, Odisha-made clothing is now poised to reach wider international markets with greater ease, official sources said on Thursday.

With the United States easing import duties, exports from Odisha are expected to become more competitive. This move is likely to create new income avenues for weavers and handloom artisans across the State. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in a social media post, stated that Odisha’s traditional attire is set to emerge as a new drift in the global landscape.

Taking to his personal ‘X’ handle, CM Majhi stated, “Be it Odisha's handloom or modern readymade garments; as a result of the India-USA trade agreement, Odisha's craftsmanship will now reach everywhere. Due to the easing of duties, exports will become easier, which will open new avenues of employment for our weavers and handloom artisans. Odisha's traditional attire will now create a new trend in the global market.”

The reduction in tariffs is expected to significantly increase exports of Odisha-manufactured textiles and garments. Iconic handloom varieties such as Sambalpuri, along with other traditional fabrics, will find easier access to the American market, strengthening Odisha’s presence in global fashion and trade.

“From ‘Field to Fashion,’ Odisha’s textile and garment sector is going global. Lower US tariffs unlock high-value markets for local producers, empowering textile hubs across the State and transforming traditional craftsmanship into international success,” the CM added in another post on ‘X’.
