'In Odisha, immediate action would have been initiated': Durgapur gang-rape victim's father

In another explosive statement, the victim's father also said that an effort is being made to divert attention from the incident, and he is even facing a threat to his life.

Following the alleged gang-rape of the second-year medical student from Odisha near a private medical college in Durgapur in Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, the victim's father on Saturday made concerning statements that they are not getting any kind of cooperation from the hospital authorities.

He also rued the fact that he is not getting any information from anybody about the incident. He further stated that the West Bengal government is remaining mum, though it is a sensitive incident. He also stated that had the incident happened in Odisha, immediate action would have been taken.

"I am not getting any help from the hospital authorities. Even though there is a threat to my life. The West Bengal government is remaining mum, though it is a sensitive incident. If the incident had happened in Odisha, immediate action would have been taken. I am not getting any help from anybody here, and my brother only helped me here. Had the incident happened in Odisha, immediate action would have been taken," rued the victim's father.

As per sources, the student, hailing from Jaleswar in Balasore district, is currently undergoing treatment, and her condition is stated to be critical.

Following the incident, unrest prevailed on the campus as scores of students staged a demonstration demanding immediate arrests of the accused.

The incident has drawn strong reactions from women’s rights groups, who have demanded immediate arrests and enhanced campus security across private medical institutions in West Bengal.
