Bhubaneswar: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued thunderstorm and lightning warning for next 24 hours for 16 districts of Odisha.

The alert has been issued for the districts of Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada. Apart from thunderstorm and lightning, people have been advised to remain alert as gusty surface wind reaching speeds up to 30 to 40 kmph will also prevail along the districts in the next 24 hours.

As per IMD, the upper air trough from Bihar to Chhattisgarh has become less marked. Similarly, southwest monsoon has further advanced into some parts of Central Arabian Sea, entire Kerala, Mahe and some parts of Bengal and eastcentral Bay of Bengal.

“A low pressure area is likely to develop over eastern parts of westcentral Bay of Bengal around June 8. Several parts of Odisha will witness thunderstorm and lightning activities which are likely to continue till June 9,” IMD said in its release.

Update for Day 2 (Valid from June 5 to 0830 hrs of June 6): Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm likely to occur at one or two places over some districts of coastal Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundergarh, Dhenkanal, Koraput, Malkangiri.

Day 3 (Valid from June 6 to 0830 Hrs of June 7): Yellow warning issued for districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Mayurbhanj as thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur in these districts.

Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm also likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Gajapati and remaining districts of South Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore.

Day 4: (Valid from June 7 to 0830 hrs of June 8): Light to moderate rainfall or thunderstorm likely over the districts of south coastal Odisha, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal.

Yellow warning: Thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of south coastal Odisha, Makangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Balasore.

Day 5 (Valid from June 8 to 0830 hours of June 9): Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm likely to occur in some parts of coastal Odisha, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal.

Yellow warning: Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind with speed reaching 30 to 40 kmph likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of coastal Odisha, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Kandhamal.
