Rising illegal sand mining activities have triggered widespread resentment among villagers in Atasahi under the Ghasipura block of Keonjhar district. Residents allege that the unchecked operations by sand mafia are not only damaging agricultural lands but also destroying vital rural infrastructure.
According to local sources, sand is being extracted illegally from the Kusei riverbed and transported using heavily loaded tractors and trucks. This illegal transportation has been ongoing for months, with little to no administrative intervention. Farmers report that the illegal mining has eroded fertile soil and rendered their farmland unfit for cultivation, directly impacting their livelihoods.
Furthermore, the movement of sand-laden vehicles through narrow village roads has deteriorated the condition of rural roads, making them nearly unusable. Residents, especially the elderly and school-going children, are finding it increasingly difficult to travel due to the poor condition of the pathways.

“It is very dangerous for children, especially while they are going to school, tuition, or to and from home. The way the vehicles are speeding is very dangerous for everyone. We have alerted the mining officer, but he is not taking any action in this regard. We will be grateful if this comes to an end,” alleged a local.
Despite repeated pleas to local authorities, villagers claim that no strict action has been taken against the culprits. Many believe the illegal operation is being carried out under the protection of influential individuals, which has emboldened the miscreants.
With fear and frustration mounting, the villagers are now demanding immediate government intervention. They urged the district administration and police to crack down on the illegal sand trade, restore damaged roads, and take steps to protect the environment and farmland around the Kusei river.
