Holy ‘Pausha Purnima’ observed at Puri Srimandir; Lord Jagannath & Siblings to adorn Suna Besha today

The Srimandir at Odisha's Puri is observing Pausha Purnima on Saturday with the performance of the Suna Besha of the Holy Trinity, a significant ritual in the annual temple calendar.

The Srimandir at Odisha's Puri is observing Pausha Purnima on Saturday with the performance of the Suna Besha of the Holy Trinity, a significant ritual in the annual temple calendar. On this occasion, the Pushyabhisheka ritual of Lord Jagannath is conducted in accordance with established temple traditions, drawing the attention of devotees across the state.

As part of the ceremonial proceedings, 108 pots of water mixed with ghee, which was kept in the Adhibasa Griha since Friday, are sanctified with sandalwood paste. These consecrated pots are  used for the Abhisheka of Lord Jagannath as per ritual norms. Following the Abhisheka, the daily sequence of temple rituals continues under the supervision of the servitors, as sources said.

Sridevi’s Ritual Progression

After receiving the Agyanmala from Lord Jagannath, Maa Lakshmi, proceeds in her Sridevi palanquin to Jagamohan. There, rituals including Majana and Banaka Lagi are performed. Upon completion of these rites, Sridevi is adorned in Suna Besha, marking an important part of the day’s observances.

Suna Besha On Ratna Singhasan

Subsequently, the Suna Besha of Lord Jagannath is performed on the Ratna Singhasan. Lord Jagannath is adorned in Suna Besha on five occasions every year. Of these, the besha is observed four times on the Ratna Singhasan, while on Hari Sayana Ekadashi, the deity gives darshan in Suna Besha on the chariot.

On the Ratna Singhasan, Lord Jagannath gives darshan in Rajarajeshwara Besha on Pausha Purnima, Phalguna Purnima, Kartika Purnima, and Vijaya Dashami. On Saturday, the besha is scheduled to be performed after the Sakala Dhupa rituals.

Gold Adornments For Darshan

During the Suna Besha, Lord Jagannath is adorned with a Kirita (crown), Sripayara, Sribhuja, Harida Mala, Bahada Mala, and various other forms of gold ornaments, before giving darshan to devotees, in keeping with long-standing temple customs.
