Hirakud Dam to get additional spillway in 3 years

Sambalpur: The Hirakud water reservoir will get an additional spillway in three years, informed Odisha Water Resources Department principal secretary, Pradeep Jena today. According to Jena, the additional spillway will be built at a cost of Rs 500 crore and the construction work will be completed in three years.

“An additional spillway will be constructed on the right-side embankment. This will help in release of extra water during high flood,” Pradeep Jena said.

According to reports, Hirakud Dam presently has 64 sluice gates and 34 crest gates for releasing of flood water.

Speaking on the Dam Safety Conference, Jena said “The conference will discuss issues pertaining to dam safety, case studies and dam safety related development across the world. This will benefit the engineers of our country.”

The Dam Safety Conference will be held in Odisha on February 14 and 15. The Chairperson of Central Water Commission and other members met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today in this regard and invited the latter to the conference.
