High drama in Bhubaneswar: Drunk driver sparks chaos, traffic comes to standstill

A drunk auto-rickshaw driver created a major disturbance on Thursday on a busy road in the State Capital, triggering panic and traffic disruption for nearly half an hour. The driver himself overturned his auto on the road and hurled verbal abuse at passersby, using obscene language, escalating the situation into a public nuisance.

According to sources, the untoward incident occurred in front of the Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV No.-1) in Unit-9 locality, where commuters and locals witnessed the chaos. Due to the commotion, traffic on the road from Ram Mandir Square to Rupali Chhak came to a complete halt, causing long queues and inconvenience.

Eventually, two PCR teams reached the spot, managed to subdue him, and took him into custody. Police teams initially faced difficulty in controlling the auto driver, who was in an inebriated condition and continued to behave very aggressively. The accused auto driver has been detained at Kharvel Nagar Police Station for further action.

“When I came here along with schoolchildren in my vehicle, he (the accused) was drunk. By that time, he had already completed three rounds around the school. I could not find a way to enter the school premises to bring some other children, as he was creating high drama. His vehicle was blocking the passage,” another auto-rickshaw driver expressed.

“Everyone became scared due to the drunkard’s abnormal behaviour. Perhaps the man had also consumed a narcotic substance. He created complete chaos,” the 2nd driver stated.

However, no comments were received from the local police in this regard.
