The India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre in Bhubaneswar issued an alert on Monday predicting heavy rainfall across Odisha from October 24 to 26.

According to the IMD forecasts, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal within the next 12 hours, which could intensify further into a well-marked system over the following 24 hours.
Due to changing conditions over the sea, several parts of the State may start experiencing rainfall as early as tomorrow. Light to moderate showers are expected in isolated locations, with southern and coastal districts more likely to be affected.
The IMD has also warned of wind speeds ranging between 30 to 40 kmph during this period. However, no cyclone warning has been issued for Odisha so far.
Local authorities are closely monitoring the system, and residents, especially in vulnerable areas, are advised to stay alert. Fishermen and coastal dwellers are cautioned against venturing into the sea during this period.
“The upper air cyclonic circulation over south Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal persisted and extended up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a Low Pressure area is likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a Depression over central parts of south Bay of Bengal and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours,” Director of IMD regional centre, Manorama Mohanty, said.
“As a result, the State will witness rainfall activities during the coming 5-7 days. Moreover, as the direction of the wind has changed, moisture will be there and it will cause rainfall in the State,” the regional centre Director expressed.
