The temple town of Puri experienced torrential rainfall on Sunday noon, causing significant waterlogging across the city and disrupting critical services. The downpour, which began around 2 PM, lasted for nearly one and a half hours, submerging several areas.
The drainage system was overwhelmed, leading to clogged drains and water accumulation. Shockingly, rainwater entered the main government hospital in Puri, creating a critical situation for patients and their attendants.
Several key areas, including Bada Danda (Grand Road) and surrounding localities, were inundated, disrupting normal life. Residents have raised concerns about inadequate drainage and the recurring issue of waterlogging during heavy rains.
The downpour comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a fresh low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring unsettled weather across coastal Odisha for this Diwali period.

The system is forecast to push heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds into the coastal districts in the coming days.
After a brief dry spell, isolated rain and thunderstorms are expected in southern and coastal districts, including Malkangiri, Rayagada, Koraput, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. These conditions are anticipated to persist through October 20 and 21, with lightning and gusty surface winds of up to 30–40 kmph in the affected areas.
According to the IMD, multiple districts are currently under a yellow or orange alert, with advisories issued for sea-fishing operations and for people in low-lying zones to remain vigilant.
