Heavy rain wreaks havoc in Ganjam, overflowing reservoir causes flooding Photograph: (OTV)
Normal life in Ganjam district has been severely disrupted as rising water levels in the Ghodahada reservoir at Digpahandi led to flooding in several areas. The overflow from the reservoir inundated roads across low-lying regions, bringing daily commute and vehicular movement to a standstill.
In response to the soaring water levels, four gates of the Ghodahada reservoir were opened in the presence of the district Collector. The administration has also issued alerts through public announcement systems, urging residents to exercise caution and avoid riverbank areas.
Patrapur block was among the worst affected, with localities such as Turubudi and Khariaguda witnessing traffic paralysis due to waterlogged streets. On the Fashiguda-Bhishmagiri main road, nearly one and a half feet of water has accumulated, making travel extremely difficult.
Disaster management teams have been deployed to monitor the situation and respond promptly to emergencies. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain vigilant while navigating affected areas.
Ganjam district witnessed continuous rainfall throughout Thursday, worsening the situation. The Badapada-Sindha road has been submerged as water from the Ram river overflowed onto the roadway. Construction machinery and a contractor’s camp set up for building a bridge over the Ram river were also washed away.
