Continuous rainfall since early Friday morning has thrown traffic out of gear across the capital of Odisha, Bhubaneswar, causing severe congestion and delays on major routes. The persistent downpour has led to widespread waterlogging, disrupting normal life and making commuting a challenge for residents.
Several key roads, including the stretch from Jaydev Vihar to Nandankanan, reported heavy traffic jams, with vehicles moving at a snail’s pace during peak hours. Commuters have voiced frustration over prolonged travel times and the lack of proper drainage in several low-lying areas.
The situation was further compounded by a low-pressure system in the region and the implementation of a traffic advisory issued ahead of the Durga Puja festivities.
The advisory, in effect from September 27 to October 2, aims to streamline vehicular movement and manage crowds during the festive period, though Friday’s rain made conditions particularly challenging for city traffic authorities.
Restrictions on Heavy Vehicles
As part of the advisory, heavy vehicles have been barred from several key routes, including Rasulgarh to Lingipur, Vani Vihar to Sishu Bhawan Square, and Acharya Vihar to Kalinga Hospital Square, among others. These restrictions will be in force from 2 pm to 2 am daily, as part of measures to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow during peak hours.
Authorities Seek Alternatives to Manage Traffic
The heavy rainfall and resulting congestion have created multiple challenges for commuters. In response, the traffic unit is actively exploring alternative routes and measures to manage the situation more effectively. Officials are urging motorists to follow the advisory, exercise patience, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak hours to prevent further delays.
The combined impact of persistent rain and festival-related traffic management is expected to continue over the next few days, and authorities are keeping a close watch to ensure minimal disruption to commuters and residents in Bhubaneswar.
