A preliminary geological survey has identified the presence of graphite deposits beneath the soil in the Daspalla area of Nayagarh district, prompting detailed exploratory drilling operations in Tumandi village. The exercise is being carried out following satellite-based identification by geologists to assess the extent and commercial viability of the mineral reserves.

According to sources, geologists first detected potential graphite deposits through satellite imagery, after which machine-assisted drilling was initiated on the ground. Boreholes ranging from 120 feet to 200 feet in depth are currently being drilled at multiple locations in and around Tumandi village to collect samples.

Officials involved in the exploration said the process aims to determine the quantity and quality of graphite present beneath the surface. Samples collected from various drilling points are being sent to laboratories for detailed analysis.

Testing Underway To Assess Deposits

Local residents said the exploration work has been underway for nearly two months. While initial findings have indicated traces of graphite at a few locations, further testing is being conducted to confirm the presence and extent of the deposits.

Susant Sahoo, a local resident, said, “Exploration work is being carried out to detect graphite deposits. Drilling is taking place on private land. So far, only small traces of graphite have been found, though larger marble deposits have also been identified. If commercially viable graphite reserves are confirmed, the authorities will decide on the next course of action.”

Employment Hopes Among Local Youths

The ongoing exploration has raised hopes among local youths, who believe that the establishment of a graphite mine in the area could generate employment opportunities.

Dipti Ranjan Kasyap, a machine operator involved in the drilling work, said, “Tests are being conducted to assess the presence of graphite. We started the work nearly two months ago and have drilled at around five locations so far. Some traces of graphite have been detected.”
