A goods train was temporarily halted on Thursday after a herd of elephants was spotted crossing the railway track at Nambira under the South Eastern Railway route in Odisha. The precautionary measure enabled the animals to cross safely without any untoward incident.
According to reports, a herd of four elephants, including two calves, was seen approaching and crossing the railway line. Upon receiving prior information about the movement of the elephants, railway personnel ensured that a goods train heading towards Bansapani was stopped nearly 200-metre before the crossing point.
Train Stopped Following Alert
The loco pilot was alerted about the presence of elephants near the track, following which the train was brought to a halt. Reports indicate that the train remained stationary at a distance of about 200-metre to allow the herd to pass.
Witnesses stated that the elephants initially paused midway after noticing the stationary train. After a brief halt, the animals calmly crossed the railway track.
Authorities On Alert In Elephant Corridor
The Forest Department is closely monitoring the movement of elephants in the region and remains on alert. Keonjhar and adjoining areas frequently witness elephant movement.
As per reports, an elephant had died after being hit by a train in the same region in 2023. Following several such incidents in the past, authorities are said to be taking precautionary measures more seriously.
No official reaction was available from the Railway authorities or Champua Forest officials regarding prior coordination or warning to the train pilot. However, it was reported that a railway staff member noticed the movement of the elephants and informed the loco pilot in time, preventing any mishap.
