Two wagons of a goods train derailed on the joint line of the Howrah–Mumbai main line near the Bondamunda Railway Station area under the Chakradharpur Railway Division in Sundargarh district in Odisha, railway officials said on Saturday.
The incident occurred when the freight train was en route from the Jharsuguda exchange yard to MCL.
According to information available, the derailment took place within the jurisdiction of the Chakradharpur Railway Division, a key operational section on the Howrah–Mumbai trunk route. The goods train was moving along the joint line near Bondamunda when the incident occurred, leading to the derailment of two wagons.
No further details regarding injuries or damage to other railway assets were reported at the time of filing this report.
Technical Issue Cited As Cause
Railway sources said a component of the pressure suspension system of the goods train suddenly fell off during movement. This mechanical failure reportedly caused the train to be dragged for nearly 100 metres before two wagons went off the track.
The exact sequence of events leading to the failure is being examined as part of a detailed technical assessment.
Restoration Work And Probe Underway
Following the derailment, railway rescue and restoration teams were rushed to the site. Officials confirmed that the derailed wagons were subsequently shifted to facilitate normalisation of the track. Necessary safety protocols were followed during the restoration process to prevent any further disruption.
The Railway Department stated that a technical investigation has been initiated to ascertain the precise cause of the incident.
