Severe cold conditions have intensified across the mining region of Koida in Sundargarh, where temperatures have been steadily falling for the past week. Night-time readings have dipped below eight degrees Celsius, causing discomfort among residents and disrupting routine activities in several areas of Koida block, including Tensa, Zero Point and Kalta.
According to local reports, temperatures remained consistently low for seven consecutive days, with recorded readings below the 8°C mark. The persistent cold wave has significantly altered daily habits, particularly at a public park in Koida that typically draws morning walkers, joggers and fitness groups. The once-busy park now sees minimal footfall, with only a few determined visitors braving the biting cold.

Residents say the prevailing chill has made early-morning outings extremely difficult, with most avoiding stepping out before 7 am.
One local resident remarked, “The cold weather was always an attraction to visit the park, but nowadays the temperature is so low that only two to three people are visiting. This year, the winter is colder, and hands and feet are freezing.”
The park’s caretaker echoed the sentiment. “The cold is very severe this year. Previously, as many as 60 people used to visit the park, but now almost no one is coming,” he said.

With no immediate relief in sight, residents across the mining belt are relying on warm clothing and reduced outdoor activity to cope with the prolonged cold spell.
